Ronald W. Humenny, MBA, CPA, PFS, CFP®

Ron is the Founder and President. Ron spent more than 12 years at the international consulting firm Price Waterhouse, where he served on the National Board of Directors for Investment Policy and was Director of the Personal Financial Services Practice in Detroit, Michigan.

While at Price Waterhouse, Ron served as the personal financial planner for many executives and high net worth individuals in the Detroit area, including executives of

Detroit Edison, Kmart and Dana. In addition, he authored and delivered a 16-hour financial education presentation for salaried workers at the Ford Motor Company. He also authored and/or delivered numerous financial education and retirement planning programs to employees of many companies, including IBM, Chevron, Eaton, AT&T, Abitibi-Price, Westinghouse, Detroit Edison and Kmart.

Ron founded the Starfire companies in 1991, determined to deliver "executive level" financial counseling to anyone at the lowest possible cost. At Starfire, Ron has designed and/or delivered financial education programs for the Kmart Corporation, Bankers Trust and Detroit Edison, among others.

Ron holds a Bachelor of General Studies Degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1974) and a Master of Business Administration Degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1979).

Since early 1997, Ron's investment commentaries have been heard on WJR Radio (760 AM) in Detroit.  Currently, the commentaries air Monday through Friday at approximately 8:14 a.m. on the Paul W. Smith Morning Show.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Joyce Kashawlic, MSF, CFP ®

Joyce joined Starfire in 2005 with over twenty-five years of management experience in a wide variety of industries.  She began her career at UNISYS, leading business project teams in information technology and later operations in Dallas and Guadalajara, Mexico.  Joyce also held management positions with two major health care companies, including Director of Decision Support for Express Scripts, before moving into independent management consulting where she specialized in Government Health Care initiatives.

 
Joyce is a native New Yorker.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Bucknell University and her Masters in Finance from Walsh College. Along with her husband, Sean, they are tremendously proud of their son Bryan, recently graduated from Cornell and now relocated to Philadelphia and daughter Erin, a sophomore at the University of Michigan studying atmospheric sciences.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mary Murphy

Mary worked in administration for an international automotive supplier prior to joining the staff at Starfire.

She is our New Client Coordinator and Office Manager.

Mary has been married for 21 years and has three children. She has re-joined the work force after being home with her children for 13 years.

 

 

 

IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS

Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) - A person or firm which, for compensation, engages in the business of advising others as to the value of securities or the advisability of purchasing or selling securities. Advisers with more than $25,000,000 under management are required to register with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. There is no educational requirement.

Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) - A professional financial planner who has passed a ten-hour comprehensive exam. The exam covers various planning topics such as retirement planning, income taxes, estate and gift taxes, investments and insurance. Must meet continuing education requirements. Although many CFP licensees are fee-ONLY, many are fee-BASED, which means that they collect commissions from the sale of investment products.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - An individual who has completed at least a bachelors degree with concentrated studies in accounting and passed a comprehensive 2 ½ day examination covering taxation, accounting, auditing and business law. Must meet continuing education requirements. Previously prohibited from receiving commissions, CPAs in most states are now allowed to sell commissionable products as well as to split commissions with other financial salespersons. Many CPAs continue to refuse compensation by commissions. We at Starfire adhere to a strict no commission policy and view this to be in the best interest of all clients.

Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) - A Certified Public Accountant who specializes in personal financial planning. Such a person has at least three years of practice experience in personal financial planning, and has passed a 6-hour examination on various financial planning topics. Must meet continuing education requirements.

Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) - Most holders of this designation are in the life insurance industry. They must pass a series of 10 exams that cover various planning issues. They must meet continuing educational requirements. The vast majority are compensated by commission on product sales.

Form ADV - The form used by investment advisors to register and update registrations with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the jurisdictions that require advisors to register. The form is also used to comply with SEC Rule 206(4)-4, which requires investment advisors to disclose relevant financial and disciplinary information to clients.
